In early July 2026, Uliana Semaniuk, a researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, presented the results of her postdoctoral research at two prestigious international scientific events: the 25th FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum (FEBS YSF 2026) in Wageningen and the 50th FEBS Congress in Maastricht (the Netherlands).
The FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum 2026 brought together 100 young researchers from around the world, providing an opportunity to present their research, discuss current scientific challenges, participate in career development activities, and establish new international collaborations. The Forum served as an outstanding platform for exchanging ideas between early-career scientists and leading researchers in the life sciences.
Immediately following the YSF, from 4–8 July, participants joined the 50th FEBS Congress in Maastricht, held under the theme “Biochemistry for the Next 50 Years.” The anniversary congress brought together thousands of researchers from around the world and provided a platform for discussing the future of biochemistry, molecular biology, and the life sciences. The congress theme, “Biochemistry for the Next 50 Years,” closely reflects the mission of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, where biochemical research and the education of the next generation of scientists are integral parts of its activities.
At both events, Uliana Semaniuk presented the results of her postdoctoral research conducted under the supervision of Professor Juha Saarikangas (University of Helsinki). The project focuses on metabolic remodeling during the evolution of multicellularity in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, integrating metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolic flux analysis to understand the transition to macroscopic multicellularity.
A particularly valuable aspect of the meetings was the opportunity to connect with Ukrainian researchers working both at institutions across Europe and in Ukraine. Discussions around shared scientific interests led to new professional connections and laid the foundation for future research collaborations.
“The FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum and the FEBS Congress provided an excellent opportunity to present my research, receive valuable feedback from the international scientific community, and establish new professional connections. It was especially rewarding to meet fellow Ukrainian researchers, discuss common scientific interests, and initiate new collaborations,” said Uliana.
