Students of Lyceum №2 Explored Practical Aspects of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology

On May 21, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Carpathian National University hosted an intensive practical course in plant biochemistry and biotechnology for students of Class 9-B from Lyceum No. 2 of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council.

The event provided an excellent opportunity for school students to discover that modern science is not only about textbook pages but, above all, about experiments, research, analysis of results, and real discoveries. Throughout the session, students had the chance to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a university laboratory and experience the role of young researchers.

The practical activities for the students were conducted by Associate Professor Viktor Husak, PhD; Myroslava Vatashchuk, PhD; doctoral student Vitalii Derkachov; and first-year master’s student Uliana Kilchytska. Under their guidance, students became familiar with key areas of modern plant biochemistry and biotechnology and completed a range of practical tasks.

Particular interest among the students was generated by activities related to plant micropropagation, one of the important methods of modern biotechnology that enables the production of genetically identical plant organisms under laboratory conditions. In addition, the students performed histological and biochemical analyses of plants, learned how to work with laboratory equipment, and gained insight into methods used for studying plant tissues.

Such practical activities contribute to developing interest in natural sciences, help students better understand the importance of biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology in the modern world, and encourage further learning and scientific exploration.

We sincerely thank Natalia Borysivna Lytsur, biology teacher at Lyceum No. 2 of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council, for inspiring students’ interest in biology, supporting their curiosity, and fostering collaboration with the department.

The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences remains open to cooperation with schools, as such meetings help promote science among young people and introduce students to the fascinating world of modern biological research.
